South Sound Saturday: Evergreen Beach

July 5, 2008; 10am-3pm
People for Puget Sound will be monitoring our project at The Evergreen State College beach, the longest healthy intact stretch of shoreline beach on Eld Inlet. The project is a feasibility study to determine how best to remove bulkhead and improve habitat on the one part of the shoreline that has been impacted by a concrete bulkhead and replacement of a culvert that blocks salmon from Snyder Creek with a big bridge like culvert that will allow the fish to move in and out of the stream system. On this workday they will be measuring the vegetation and the beach slope to determine baseline conditions and to create data they can use in their feasibility study. They ask that participants have some familiarity with plants, data collection, shoreline habitats, or surveying either through earlier Sound Stewardship training or through other experiences or education.

Please sign up beforehand for directions and so they make sure to bring enough monitoring equipment.

Teen Feed Advocate

No specific date
University Street Ministry operates Teen Feed, a dinner program for homeless and street-involved youth. They serve dinner Sunday through Thursday. The heart of their program is having Advocates available to interact with the youth. This person commits to a minimum of six months to show up once a week to Teen Feed and sit and talk to the guests. The goal is to get to know them, create a safe and welcoming presence, and be available to help the young people know about services. Teen Feed interviews each potential Advocate after they have visited Teen Feed once. They seek those over 21, who show themselves comfortable interacting with youth who don’t typically trust adults. Basic responsibilities include:
  • To be consistently present and accessible to the youth: To be open and approachable, interested in getting to know the youth, hear their concerns, value their thoughts
  • To be non-judgmental and open-minded: Accept them at face value & Encourage the solutions or progress they have made
  • Demonstrate that you care: Be an attentive listener and be proactive in meeting their requests of you.
Advocates are required to attend Homelessness 101, offered for free through the University District Service Provider’s Alliance (UDSP), as well as having opportunities to attend further trainings for free. We ask Advocates to designate the day they will attend and to be dependable. It takes time to build a young person’s trust in you and Teen Feed all lose if someone doesn’t stay long enough to see this process through. Advocates must commit to a six-month minimum and pass a felony check with the Washington State Patrol.

Summer Camp Volunteer Opportunity

July 19-26, 2008
Do you have some free time this summer on July 19-26, 2008? Do you want to have the most amazing experience? Do you want to make a difference in someone's life, including your own? If so, then MDA has an opportunity of a lifetime! They are looking for dedicated responsible and compassionate volunteers to be a counselor to a child with muscular dystrophy.

MDA-sponsored summer camps offer a wide range of programs for young people ages 6 to 21 who are affected by neuromuscular disease. Campers attend weeklong sessions organized by MDA volunteers and staff. Camp activities are geared to the abilities of campers and may include fishing, swimming, horseback riding, boating, field hockey and baseball. Less physically demanding activities include arts and crafts, nature study, talent shows, cookouts and entertainment.

Volunteer counselors (who must be at least 16 years old) receive an orientation and training that includes wheelchair techniques, lifting and transfers, personal hygiene, and emergency procedures. The primary responsibility of each counselor is to provide both physical and psychological support to their camper, thereby helping them to enjoy camp. Medical staff is available throughout the week to meet any healthcare needs that may arise.
