Study Away

Section Global - Study Away
Where will you go?

PLU offers study away opportunities in the Puget Sound region, throughout the nation, and spanning the globe. Our online course catalogs, “Study Away Catalog,” will give you a complete picture of the many opportunities that are available to you for year-long, semester or J-term study and travel abroad and in the USA.

Semester/Year PLU Featured and Approved Programs
In addition to the programs led by PLU faculty or their colleagues at other universities, there are many study-travel programs to which your PLU financial aid will apply. Credits awarded by these approved programs and schools are transferable to PLU. You will find links to them in the Study Away catalog.

If you plan to enroll directly in a foreign institution (not in a program sponsored by PLU), you must file a letter of intent with The Wang Center and the chair of your major department before leaving PLU. This letter must include what classes will be taken, where and for what length of time you will study abroad, and how the international experience will relate to your academic program. On the basis of this information, plus a record of lectures attended and examinations completed, academic credit may be given by PLU – but is not guaranteed. Save all papers and other materials relating to course work taken abroad. PLU reserves the right to require examinations covering the subjects studied.

J-Term Programs
January-term is popular at PLU and we have a wide variety of faculty-led J-term off-campus courses each year.

The courses are announced in early spring, just before Spring Break, and applications become available at that time. A Study Away Fair is held early in the spring semester with the faculty directors available to answer questions about their individual courses. Course descriptions are listed in the “Study Away ” catalog. Contact the faculty director or the Wang Center for International Programs wangctr@plu.edu for more information.

Summer Programs
Every summer PLU offers exciting study away opportunities. Last summer, students studied economics in Italy, Spanish in Granada, Spain and archeology in western Washington State. Check this site regularly for updates on study away opportunities for next summer.

Good Standing

Wherever you decide to travel, keep in mind that all PLU students applying for off-campus programs are required to be students in good academic, personal, and financial standing at PLU. Good standing means that you are not on academic probation or have a financial hold, and you do not have discipline records pending. In addition, PLU students participating in semester (or full year) study abroad programs are typically required to have completed a minimum of one full year (32 credits) in residence prior to the program start. Minimum GPA requirements vary by program between 2.5 and 3.0.
