Perched near the center of PLU, Hinderlie gives a nice mix of upper- and lower-campus life. This hall usually hosts the first dance of the year in their basement lounge.
Named in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Berent S. Hinderlie, university staff members between 1923 and 1955.
Seth Clarence Eastvold Rev. Dr. Seth Clarence Eastvold was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 19, 1895. In 1913 he graduated from Jewell Lutheran College and Academy in Iowa and St. Olaf College in 1916. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1918 and served as a non commissioned officer with the American Expeditionary forces in Europe. Eastvold received a degree in Candidate of Theology from Luther Theological Seminary in Minnesota in 1920. He received 3 more degrees by 1931 before serving in 3 different parishes in South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
Hinderlie Hall, originally named South Hall was built in 1954. The dormitory was renamed Hinderlie Hall in 1966 to honor Berent and Ragna Hinderlie who both served as members of the university staff for 31 years. Berent Severin Hinderlie was born Sept. 1, 1878 in the town of Irene, Yankton County, South Dakota. Ragna Eurelie Arntsen was born June 15, 1884 in Baldwin, St. Croix County, Wisconsin.
The Hinderlies' were married November 2, 1902 in Canby, Oregon. Berent Hinderlie joined the PLU staff in 1924 as a janitor and served for 31 years until he retired in 1955.
