Their annual campuswide luau, held on adjacent Foss Field during Springfest, is a legendary, last-ditch chance to play before finals set in. The field is also the site for other university activities, some serious and some definitely not so serious, such as PLU football coach Frosty Westering's Dog Patch Olympics, held during orientation week.

Named for Rev. Halfdan L. Foss, chairman of the Pacific Lutheran Board of Trustees from 1942 to 1964

Rev. Halfdan L. Foss

Foss Hall was built in 1965 to house 188 men from the PLU student body. Foss Hall was named to honor of the Rev. Halfdan L. Foss, D.D, who was known as a distinguished church leader, PLU alumnus and chairman of the Board of Regents. Rev. Foss was born on February 25, 1894, in Bellingham, Washington. He attended public schools in Stanwood, Everett, and Seattle before studying at Pacific Lutheran Academy during 1914-1915.
