Named Endowments

The minimum amounts required for named endowments include, but are not limited to, the following:

1.  Endowed School: A named endowment fund to provide substantial continuing operational funding for a particular School of Pacific Lutheran University. The minimum amount required to endow a named School is $10,000,000.

2.  Endowed Academic Department: A named endowment fund to provide substantial continuing operational funding for a particular academic department or division of the university. The minimum amount required to endow a named academic department is $5,000,000.

3.  Endowed Professorship: A named endowment fund to provide salary, benefits and related expenses to cover the annual costs of a professor or associate professor. The minimum amount required to endow a named professorship is $1,000,000.

4.  Endowed Visiting Scholar: A named endowment fund to provide salary, benefits and related expenses to cover the costs of appointing a visiting scholar for a period of up to one academic year. The minimum amount required to endow a named visiting scholar is $1,000,000.

5.  Endowed Technology Fund: A named endowment fund to provide annual income restricted to the expansion and upgrading of PLU's computer and other instructional technology as part of the university's commitment to offer the latest in technological advances to its students and faculty. The minimum amount required to endow a named technology fund is $500,000.

6.  Endowed Lecture/Performance Series: A named endowment fund to support the annual costs of bringing to the PLU campus one or more distinguished lecturers or artists as a means of enriching the university's academic program and/or extending educational opportunities to the greater Tacoma community. The minimum amount required to endow a named lecture series is $500,000.

7.  Endowed Presidential Discretionary Fund: A named endowment fund to provide annual income for projects identified by the President which will support the planning, entrepreneurial, and/or management efforts of the university. The minimum amount required to endow a named presidential discretionary fund is $500,000.

8.  Endowed Regents' Scholarship: A named endowment fund to provide financial support to a student of exceptional academic performance and potential. Endowment income covers up to 100% of the tuition cost for an academic year. The minimum amount required to endow a Regent Scholarship is $300,000.

Recipients of named endowed Regents' Scholarships shall be selected through the regular financial aid administrative procedures of Pacific Lutheran University.

Pacific Lutheran University cannot accept the following restrictions on new endowed scholarship funds:

A. No scholarship may be designated for a specific recipient or for relatives or descendants of the donor(s).

B. No scholarship may specify the future employment of the recipient.

C. No scholarship may specify that monies be loaned to the recipient at a specific interest rate or with specific repayment terms.

9.  Endowed President's Scholarship: A named endowment fund to provide partial financial support to a student of exceptional academic performance and potential. The minimum amount required to endow a President's Scholarship is $100,000.

Recipients of named President's Scholarships shall be selected through the regular financial aid administrative procedures of Pacific Lutheran University.

10.  Endowed Lectureship: A named endowment fund to provide a stipend and cover related expenses of bringing to the campus a distinguished scholar, artist or civic leader for a single lecture. The minimum amount required to endow a lectureship is $100,000.

11.  Endowed Faculty Development Grant: A named endowment fund to provide funding for one faculty member to undertake a special, approved faculty development activity such as taking a sabbatical leave, writing a professional book or articles, enrolling for an advanced course or seminar, coordinating a joint faculty-student research project, etc. The minimum amount required to endow one faculty development grant is $50,000.

12.  Endowed Scholarship: A named endowment fund may be established to provide partial financial support to a student for the pursuit of educational opportunities offered by PacificLutheran University. Endowment income covers partial tuition for an academic year. The minimum amount required to endow a scholarship is $25,000.

Recipients of named scholarships shall be selected through the regular financial aid administrative procedures of Pacific Lutheran University.

The same restrictions outlined above under "Endowed Regents' Scholarship" shall be applied to any named endowed scholarship.

13.  Named Endowed Library Fund: A named endowment fund may be established to provide annual revenues for the purchase of books, journals, and/or other instructional media by the PLU library. The minimum amount required to endow a library fund is $25,000.
