  • Environment & Culture Dr. Kevin O’Brien
    Room 200, Hauge Administration Building
    Introduces the study of environmental issues from the perspective of the humanities —literature, philosophy, and especially religion. We will read about, discuss, and reflect on “culture” and “environment,” and focus our attention particularly on the responses of religious traditions like Christianity and Buddhism to the contemporary reality of environmental degradation.

  • Meant to Live Alumni Panel Discussion
    Regency Room, Anderson University Center
    Hear from alumni across the disciplines of the School of Education.  They will answer a series of questions describing how they came to live their vocations, as well as share significant mile posts, accomplishments and opportunities that continue to affirm their pathways.
  • Molecules, Cells & Organisms
    Dr. Neva Laurie-Berry
    Room 101, Hauge Administration Building
    In the first semester of the biology core, we start with the molecular building blocks of life and work our way up, exploring how those building blocks interact to carry out everything from photosynthesis and cell division to action potentials in your brain. We stress active learning, so you may be invited to join a group of students in a hands-on activity, such as drawing protein processing within a cell or acting out electron flow during cellular respiration.
  • Social Psychology
    Dr. Jon Grahe
    Room 104, Olson Auditorium
    The study of how an individual's thoughts and behaviors are influenced by the presence of others. Research and theory concerning topics such as personal perception, attitudes, group processes, prejudice, aggression and helping behaviors are discussed.

    Professor Mooney will be going over bond valuation techniques, along with some stock valuation.

  • Oceanography
    Dr. Jill Whitman
    Room 109, Reike Science Center
    Oceanography is the scientific study of the ocean, its surroundings, and the lifeforms within it. We will explore the geological, physical, chemical, biological, and climatic aspects of the seas and the connections between them. As we study the features and processes in the oceans, we will focus on the interactions between humans and the oceans and the impact of oceans on our lives.

Distinguished Alumnus Seminar: Balancing Academic Neurosurgery: From Epileptic Neurons to the Pearl of Africa

Professor Michael Haglund '80, MD, Ph.D. A PLU 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award Winner, Distinguished Duke Professor of Neurosurgery, Neurobiology, and Global Health.

Dr. Haglund will discuss his research from bench to bedside as Program Director of the Duke Neurosurgery Training Program, Director of the Duke in Uganda Neurosurgery Program, and Surgical Director of the Duke Epilepsy Center. Foundations of his work include clinical expertise and technical neurosurgery capabilities that help patients at the most complex and highest level, teaching, and caring for and giving back to those in need. Please join us for his talk.
