Associate Professor & Chair
MFA, Visual Communication, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago
BFA, Visual Communication, Valparaiso University
Jp joined the department in 2004. He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in Visual Communication from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and my Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual Communication from Valparaiso University. He specializes in information graphics and non-linear narrative structures in visual novellas.
As a visual artist, Jp is concerned with bringing accessible art experiences to his community. From his own background as an art educator, he uses design to enrich every life, help people to ask questions, provide visual stimulation, and nurture meaningful, positive dialogue on a daily basis. As a graphic designer, Jp works in several mediums including handmade artist books, acetate layering, and traditional digital printouts on canvas and paper.
His interest and research is focused on visual communications and other contemporary social issues through the examination of non-linear narratives, the melding of disparate topics, and the examination of larger socio-cultural issues. Jp’s graphic design work focuses on the harmony of elements and symbolism as interpreted through the context of self-examination and community identification. I explore the meaning of my art through typography and image compositions, interweaving text and image to tell “our” story; the fundamental narrative of living.
