Season Opener for the Lutes Ends
in a 6-6 Draw

WHITTIER – The first game of the season for the Pacific
Lutheran baseball team ended in a draw as the Lutes battled
to a 6-6 tie against Whittier College. The game was called
after nine complete innings due to darkness.
For the Lutes, who are ranked 12th in the NCAA Division
III, this was their first draw since the 2000 season. Whittier
moves to 0-4-1 on the season.
Pacific Lutheran jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the
first two innings. Whittier answered in the third inning
bringing in four runs, adding another in the fourth inning
to tie things up.
Sophomore Trey Watt made his first career start for the
Lutes going 4.2 innings allowing five earned runs and striking
out four batters. Freshman pitcher Bret Handy relieved Watt
and pitched through the seventh inning earning three strike
outs.
Catcher Brandon Sales had a big game for the Lutes going
2-for-4 with four RBIs and a home run.
The Lutes continue their California tour as they take on
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps today in Claremont. Game time is
scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
