Women's Pair Places Third to Pace PLU at WIRA

Final Results

Amber Iverson

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The women's pair of Kat Jenkins and Amber Iverson put in the best performance by a Pacific Lutheran boat in the final day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on Lake Natoma, placing third in their event.

Jenkins and Iverson had qualified for the grand final with the second best time in the preliminaries, but they ended up finishing third with a time of 8:38.4. Long Beach State took the victory in a time of 8:17.9, followed by Portland in a time of 8:30.8.

The women's novice lightweight four race was the first final on the course today, and the PLU boat finished fifth in the six-boat grand final, clocking 8:26.4. Cal Lights won that race with a time of 8:05.0.

PLU's women's lightweight four placed sixth out of seven teams, finishing in a time of 8:52.0. Loyola Marymount was the event winner in a time of 7:52.1.

Next came a tough double for the Lutes' men's lightweight four, which also qualified for the men's varsity four grand final. PLU's foursome finished fifth in a six-boat lightweight field with a time of 7:20.0, with Cal Lights winning in a time of 6:56.8. While the women's varsity four race was underway, the PLU men rowed back up the course and went right to the starting line for the men's varsity four. The lightweight rowers, competing in a grand final against larger varsity rowers from five other schools, simply ran out of gas and finished sixth in a time of 7:43.8, with champion Washington State winning with a 6:53.4. For the Lute rowers, it was an incredible double nonetheless, particularly because the two races started within 20 minutes of each other.

The only other PLU boat competing on Sunday was the women's varsity eight, which placed third in the petite (consolation) final in a time of 7:41.3.
