PLU Rowers Compete at Charlie
Brown Regatta
 |
| Amber Iverson |
Pacific Lutheran’s lone fall competition comes
this weekend as the Lutes race five boats at the Charlie Brown Regatta
in Portland, Ore.
The 4700-meter regatta course is on the Willamette
River. The fall regattas, called head races, are much longer courses
than the 2000-meter courses used during the spring race season.
Thus, the fall regattas emphasize endurance.
The men’s varsity 8 race gets the competition
going at 10 a.m. and the Lutes will send the third boat on the course
in the staggered-start format. The competing boats race against
the clock rather than against each other. The men’s varsity
8 boat features coxswain Sheri Sasaki and rowers Justin Hull, Sam
Whedon, Andy Osborn, Dan Case, Tim Postlewaite, Tyler Koehn, Chad
Hall and Joe Natwick.
The women’s varsity 8 is scheduled to start
at 10:10 a.m. and the PLU boat will be second on the course. Boat
members include coxswain Savannah Warren and rowers Amber Iverson,
Kat Jenkins, Steph Farrow, Shayna Horrocks, Sam Prevot, Claire Swanback,
Sarah Shanebeck and Katie Allen. Iverson earned Division III Second
Team All-America honors following the 2007 spring season.
PLU also has boats entered in the men’s novice
8 and the women’s novice 8 competition and those races conclude
the day’s events just after noon. Men’s novice competitors
are coxswain Adam Hoagland, Sam Whedon, Andy Osborn, Alex Burch,
Steven Rystrom, Dan Case, Axel Moestve, Petter Ege and Joe Natwick.
The Lutes will have two novice 8 women’s boats.
The novice women’s boat includes coxswain Becca Price and
rowers Audra Stafford, Caroline Olsen, Nicole Gleadle, Charlotte
Pfeiffer, Marieke Flynn, MacKenzie Sehlke, Stephanie Stout and Lynsey
Tveit. The second novice 8 will be an exhibition boat. Sasaki will
cox that boat, which includes Natalie McCarthy, Jenkins, Farrow,
Horrocks, Swanback, Prevot, Shanebeck and Allen.
