About PLU Football

Pacific Lutheran football has a rich tradition, fostered by four national championships in eight title-game appearances since 1980.

Since becoming an NCAA Division III member in 1998, the Lutes have advanced to postseason play four times. In 1999, Pacific Lutheran became the only team in Division III history to win five straight road games on the way to a national championship in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. Prior to joining the NCAA, the PLU football program made 15 NAIA postseason appearances and won championships in 1980, 1987 and 1993.

The original architect of that tradition is Frosty Westering, a member of a select fraternity of coaches who won at least 300 games. This "Who's Who" group includes Eddie Robinson, John Gagliardi, Paul "Bear" Bryant, Charles "Pop" Warner, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden. Westering achieved his 300th victory in 2003 in his final season as head coach.

The tradition continues under Scott Westering, an assistant coach at PLU for 23 years and the offensive coordinator for 21 seasons, who became the head coach prior to the 2004 season.

These traditions are not only evident on the playing field -- where PLU has won four national championships in eight title-game appearances -- but in the classroom and in community service as well.

A distinctive element of the PLU football program is involvement in Tacoma-area schools. For more than two decades, team members have been actively involved in the lives of students at Lister Elementary School, McIlvaigh Middle School and Baker Middle School in Tacoma. These role model relationships are considered essential to the overall personal development of Lute football players.

Success in the win-loss column is certainly a trademark of the coaching style at PLU. Winning and success, however, are viewed as by-products of that philosophy. The program emphasizes a double-win theme: victory on the scoreboard and the satisfaction of playing to one's personal potential.
