Pacific Lutheran has a long and storied
men's basketball history, and head coach Steve Dickerson
hopes to tap into some of that winning tradition.
Dickerson is in his second season
as PLU's head coach after serving for three years
as an assistant coach and associate head coach.
Prior to that, he had a successful high school coaching
career in the Columbus, Ohio, area.
PLU men's basketball has a tradition of success
dating all the way back to 1930. Now, almost 80
years later, the Pacific Lutheran men's program
is approaching 1,100 wins (1,074 victories entering
the 2006-07 season).
In the 1940s, Hall of Fame coach Marv
Harshman built a foundation that carried into the
late 1950s when Pacific Lutheran placed second and
third in NAIA national tournaments. The names Chuck
Curtis (NAIA Hall of Fame member), Roger Iverson
(NAIA tournament standout) and Jim Van Beek (with
Curtis and Iverson a star on the mid-50s teams),
along with player and later coach Gene Lundgaard,
are still highly regarded in Pacific Lutheran basketball
circles.
Plenty of great coaches and players
have come through the program since, continuing
to build upon the tradition of competitive PLU men's
basketball. Dickerson intends to keep that tradition
alive, and to get the Lute program around the corner
and headed back toward regional and national prominence.
