Araya Qualifies for 400-Meter Hurdles Finals
at National Meet
OSHKOSH,
Wis. – Pacific Lutheran junior Faven Araya recorded the second
fastest time in school history to advance to the finals of the women’s
400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships
being held at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Araya came into the meet with a personal best 1:02.14, but she
shattered that mark, clocking 1:01.09 to win her heat on Thursday’s
opening day of the championship meet. She will take the third fastest
qualifying time into the finals scheduled for 3:15 p.m. local time
on Saturday. Sumer Rohrs of Frostburg State (Maryland) had the fastest
qualifying time on Thursday, clocking 1:00.34, followed by Sarah
Wittingen from Calvin (Mich.) in 1:00.83.
Araya’s time jumps her from fifth to second on the all-time
Pacific Lutheran top 25 list, behind only the 59.79 recorded by
Karen Steen in 1986.
Taylor Hacker, another junior, is the only other Pacific Lutheran
athlete to qualify for the national championships. She competes
for the Lutes in the women’s hammer throw final at 3 p.m.
local time Friday. Hacker enters the meet with the nation’s
sixth-best throw at 171-5.
