PARKLAND – The Pacific Lutheran volleyball team overcame
a sloppy second game to overpower Saint Martin’s in a 3-1
victory (30-20, 26-30, 30-20, 30-27) in non-conference women’s
volleyball action Tuesday night in Olson Auditorium. The win moves
PLU up to 15-3 overall and keeps winning streak alive at 11. Saint
Martin’s drops to 1-16 on the season.
The 17th-ranked Lutes came out strong in the first game connecting
for a .344 percentage (16 kills and five errors) to .138 for the
Saints (eight kills and five errors). Stacie Matz helped set the
tone with six kills and three digs in game one.
Game two was a different story, as the Lutes played sloppy committing
five service errors while their attack percentage was .098. Saint
Martin’s capitalized on these errors as their team nailed
13 kills and four blocks in the second game. This was the first
game the Lutes have dropped since September 19 when the Lutes beat
Puget Sound, 3-1.
PLU was able to hold things together in the final two games as
head coach Kevin Aoki made a plethora of substitutions. By the end
of the match all 16 PLU players had seen action.
Three Lutes were in double figures in the kills category as Matz
notched 18, Beth Hanna 16 and Kelcy Joynt 14. Freshman Sara Beaver
and Senior Gina Di Maggio shared the load in assists with the two
earning 49 of the teams 58 total digs.
Shealun Campisi was the kill leader for the Saints with 17 and
Kimber Simonetti posted the most digs with 14.
The Lutes travel to Salem for their next match as they take on
Northwest Conference foe Willamette at 7 p.m. Friday.
