This department is unique in structure and function in that all employees are required to meet exceptionally stringent rules and are given responsibilities that are not required by most other employees of the university.
All employees are required to consistently promote and demonstrate professionalism and positive public relations in the performance of their duties as representatives of this office and Pacific Lutheran University.
Our student Campus Safety Officers are an integral part of the campus security program. Due to their high visibility, Campus Safety Officers are seen by the general public more than any other representative of the university. Therefore, their actions and how they handle themselves are very important. Image and public relations are key to success. Employees’ actions reflect not only on themselves, but on the entire department and university. The image student employees present may determine the degree of respect and cooperation they receive from the university community, and may play an important role in maintaining the sense of a safe environment necessary to the pursuit of the academic goals of the university.
Office and field positions

Campus Safety currently has two office positions for students: Communications and Video. We also have two field positions: Safety and Escort. Each position has different responsibilities and requirements, so please read the brief descriptions below to see which one best fits your needs. We allow cross-training for those that are interested in working multiple positions.
Brief Job Position Descriptions
Communications Officer:
The "CO" is the communications 'hub' for the department, answering the Campus Safety non-emergency and emergency lines, dispatching Safety and Escort Officers to their individual calls, screening students for admits, issuing keys, vehicle rentals, occasionally answering the Campus Operator phone, and much more...
Requirements:·
Must be proficient enough in the English language to effectively communicate over phone, radio and in written form.
Capable of multitasking in high-stress situations.
Escort Officer:
The "EO" is responsible for the safety of students, staff and PLU affiliates that request an escort. They communicate with the "CO" for each call and record information on each escort.
Requirements:
Must be proficient enough in the English language to effectively communicate over phone, radio and in written form.
Must have a current US-recognized driver's license and be eligible for a PLU driver's certification.
Safety Officer:
An "SO" can be considered to be the police, fire and medical responder for the University. Along with routine checks of all University buildings, Safety Officers frequently respond to medical calls, fire and intrusion alarms, take information and write reports, provide walking escorts, are a resource for information and patrol campus property and parking lots.
Requirements:
Must be proficient enough in the English language to effectively communicate over phone, radio and in written form.
Must have a current US-recognized driver's license and be eligible for a PLU driver's certification.
Must be able to pass a semi-annual run-test of a 1/2 mile in 3:40.
Video Officer:
The "VO" is responsible for monitoring the various cameras that are located around the campus, logging and reporting all activities to the Safety Officers, reviewing prior footage and backing up videos for disciplinary action or for use by the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.
