CANDIDATE COMMENCEMENT INSTRUCTIONS
To: May & August 2013 Graduation Candidates
From: Kristin Plaehn, Registrar
Congratulations! I look forward to seeing you in your regalia (cap/gown/hood/tassel) on commencement day! To be ready for the celebration, please note the following important information.
In Absentia: If you are unable to attend commencement, please contact Kelly Gaspar Poth, Curriculum & Graduation Administrator, in the Registrar’s Office by May 17th. She can be reached by e-mail at email@example.com.
GRAD FAIR: Cap/Gown Pick-Up: Caps/gowns MUST be picked-up at the Garfield Book Company on Tuesday, May 21st or Wednesday, May 22nd 4:00-6:30 PM each day.
If you cannot attend the GRAD FAIR, you MUST have a friend pick-up your cap/gown with a signed note.
***If you did not submit a cap/gown order with Royal-T, a limited supply of extras will be available at GRAD FAIR. Extras will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis starting at 4:00 PM on May 21st. A late fee will apply (CASH ONLY).
Photography: GradImages.com will be at the ceremony to photograph each graduation candidate. A candid photo is taken as candidates are individually congratulated by the President & a ceremony portrait is taken as they exit the stage. This service is complimentary; there is no obligation to purchase. Proofs are distributed via mail & email. Candidates may then choose from different packages or order individual photographs. For more information call 1.800.261.2576 or visit GradImages.com.
NOTE: It will not be possible for guests to approach the stage for pictures during the ceremony.
Assembling for Commencement: Plan to arrive at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall (adjacent to the Tacoma Dome) at 1:30 PM on Sunday, May 26th. Please do not arrive early as the doors do not open before 1:30 PM. The ceremony will start at 2:30 PM sharp. Make sure to leave time for traffic & parking when leaving for the ceremony. Parking in Tacoma Dome operated parking lots is free. There is additional on-street parking in the vicinity of the Tacoma Dome. Guests cannot enter the Exhibition Hall with you.
When you arrive, you will be given a preprinted name & degree card to help with the processional & diploma march order. Graduates form lines in alphabetical order by degree. After all graduates are in their cap & gown & seated, instructions for the processional, the diploma march, hooding & the recessional will be given at 2:00 PM.
Do not plan to leave any personal belongings in the Exhibition Hall, as the hall will be cleaned out during the ceremony & items will not be there when you return. Leave cameras, purses, coats, keys, etc. with friends, family members or locked in your car. PLU is not responsible for any items left behind.
During the Commencement Ceremony: After arriving at your seat in the auditorium, please remain standing until the “Amen” of the opening prayer.
As degrees are conferred, first bachelor’s then master’s, candidates are requested to stand. After conferral, all candidates are seated & then stand & proceed to the stage as directed by the marshals. Candidates carry their hood draped across their left arm. The candidates proceed onto the stage to have their names read. They then walk across the stage to shake hands with President Krise. This is the time when a candid photo is taken of each candidate. Following the directions of the marshals, candidates are then hooded before leaving the stage. As candidates exit the stage, they receive their diploma cover & the photographer takes a ceremony portrait. Candidates then return to their seats.
Degree/Diploma Information: Participating in a commencement ceremony does not guarantee you will receive a degree. All university & degree requirements must be met by the University deadlines, see below, to receive a degree.
