Diversity Week brings a variety of educational and entertaining events that celebrate diversity on campus through dance, discussions and activities.

Faces of PLU: Diversity Week 2010

PLU’s Diversity Week 2010 will be held May 1 to May 8. It is a whole series events that sponsored by ASPLU and the Diversity Center, the week will include events to raise awareness about cultural, educational, gender, and societal issues.

Schedule of Diversity Week 2010 is as follows:


5/1 - The New American Family: Defining Commitment in a Changing Society

Time:2:00 pm

Location: Seattle Central Public Library

Head up to Seattle to see PLU MediaLab's new documentary:

The documentary looks into the especially contentious debate over Washington State's "everything but marriage" voter referendum that passed last November, granting state benefits to same sex couples.


5/3 - Spirit of Diversity Awards 2010

Time: 5:30pm

Location: South Hall

This annual event will be hosted by the Diversity Center's Diversity Advocate Staff. The program will include a review of Diversity Center programming from the past year, several musical highlights, and official recognition of several PLU community members who have exemplified advocacy and support of Diversity and Social Justice on campus. Refreshments will be provided.


5/4 - Appetizers and Engaging Talk: Arizona Senate Bill 1070

Time: 6:00pm

Location: Diversity Center

Come join in conversation surrounding Arizona's new Immigration Law. Professors Maria Chavez, Tamara Williams and Carmina Palerm will provide context and commentary in order to allow students a greater understanding of this complex issue.


5/5 - Rumba in the Cave!

Time: 8:30pm, H.U.M.P

Location: The Cave

Join Latinos Unidos for a night filled with music, dance and multi-cultural fun!


"La Otra Frontera/The Other Border"

Time: 4pm

Location: Hong Hall Main Lounge

Maria B. Gillman, M.AIS., will present on "the forgotten border" between Mexico and Guatemala and the conditions under which Central American migrants ghave to travel through Mexico in their attempt to reach el norte, in search of work and better life conditions. The lecture will be presented in both Spanish and English. 

5/6 - Movie: Inlaws & Outlaws + conversation with filmmaker Drew Emery 

Time: 6:00 pm

5/8 - LollaPLUza!

LollaPLUza is an annual outdoor music festival open to the greater Parkland community. The event put on by the Associated Students of Pacific Lutheran University. PLU clubs, Residence Hall Councils, and organizations will have booths and activities, while both student and local musicians will perform. This year, in honor of Diversity Week, LollaPLUza will also be featuring Lion Dancers, Henna art, and other multi-cultural expressions of art and music.
