Master of Arts in Education: Instructional Leadership (for teachers)


The PLU School of Education & Movement Studies announces a new Master of Arts in Education: Instructional Leadership Program. This program prepares accomplished teachers to become instructional facilitators, mentors and coaches in their schools and districts. The program provides dynamic and rigorous learning opportunities for candidates to both deepen their understanding of effective P-12 instruction and to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for successful teacher leadership within the context of standards-based educational reform. The program prepares teacher leaders to assist other teachers to collect and analyze evidence of student learning, to provide passionate, informed and ethical leadership at the school, district and state levels, to foster professional learning communities, and to build meaningful and engaging partnerships with families and community stakeholders.

Q: Who is eligible for the program?

A: Any certified teacher who has completed a Washington State Professional Certification program or possesses equivalent certification such as a Washington State Continuing Certificate or National Board certification is eligible to apply.

Admission Process

Submit a graduate application and the following:

  • Résumé: Attach a résumé that includes your employment history; significant academic, professional, and community achievements; honors and awards.
  • Application Essay: Submit a written essay indentifying and discussing three value commitments that will influence your work as a teacher.  It should be between 500 and 750 words in length on a separate piece of paper.  Please reference your name on the page.

  • Submit two letters of recommendation: One academic /professional reference and one that speaks to the candidate’s work with young people.

  • 40.00 application fee.

  • Formal group interview

An applicant who has been offered admission to the program may submit a portfolio for juried review. If the candidate is determined to be at or beyond the Descriptions of Practice level, s/he may be awarded up to 10 tuition-free credits to be applied toward the 32-credit program/degree. Guidelines for the construction and content of the portfolios will be available in the School of Education and Movement Studies office beginning February 16, 2009.
