Course Description

The Next Frontier is here. Come join us at PLU!

Come to an AP Biology Summer Institute at the beautiful campus of Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland, Washington. We’ve taught the redesigned AP Biology course and we have our students’ scores on the 2013 AP Biology Exam. So what’s next? It’s time to review and revise. Institute participants will review the AP Biology Curriculum Framework and the 7 Science Practices, but the major focus will be on the Science Practices. We will discuss ways to revise existing classroom activities and labs in order to increase student achievement on the AP Biology Exam. We will explore ways in which we can aid our students in gaining a deeper conceptual understanding of biology through inquiry-based activities like case studies and POGIL activities that give students opportunities to use the Science Practices.

Participants will review free response questions on the 2014 AP Biology exam and examine various reading, writing, and test-taking strategies that can be used to improve student performance on future AP Exams. The instructor will share classroom strategies and tools learned at the 2013 AP Biology Leadership Academy, including but not limited to, developing norms of collaborative work, the I (Identify and Interpret) strategy, evidence-based claims, and writing scientific explanations.

We will perform as many of the suggested labs in the lab manual as possible within our limited timeframe, but discussions on planning how to implement those inquiry-based labs that require extended time will occur throughout the week. All participants are expected to bring a calculator, a notebook, and enough copies of their favorite biology activity or lab to share with others. Come with ideas, questions, and suggestions to share.
