German playwright visits PLU in commemoration of the fall of the wall

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall (November 9, 1989), PLU will host Holger Teschke, a German playwright, director, poet and former artistic director at the famed Berliner Ensemble (founded by Bertolt Brecht). Teschke, a native of the Baltic island of Rügen in the former East Germany, teaches and directs internationally and has been on the theater faculty at Mount Holyoke College since 1996. Teschke will spend two days on campus.

On Thursday, November 5, at 7:30 pm, in the UC Regency Room, Teschke will give a presentation entitled: “On Earthquakes, Tsunamis and the Natural History Of Politics: An Artist’s Perspective on German Unification.”

The following afternoon, Friday, November 6, at 4:00 pm, The Cave in the UC, Teschke will stage one of his own short dramatic works in English translation, with PLU student actors Bristol Whalen and Anjelica Wolf. The piece, “Money” (original title “Geldstück”), is a farce in one act that takes a biting, satirical look at the human cost of brutal credit markets. Teschke wrote it in 1996, in the heady aftermath of German unification, when financial institutions were eagerly fueling the fires of rampant consumerism. Reality caught up with his play not long after it was written, as it has again in just the past several months. Audience members will find it strikingly relevant to our current crisis. Following the play Teschke will respond to audience questions and comments. Both his talk and the play performance are free and open to the public.

Teschke’s visit is generously co-sponsored by the following PLU units: Languages & Literatures; Communication & Theater; History; and Political Science; by the School of Business, Division of Humanities, International Honors Program, and the Office of the Provost; and by the University of Puget Sound's Departments of Foreign Languages & Literature; History; Politics & Government; and by the UPS Humanities Program..
