Women's Studies

Why Women’s Studies?

Women’s Studies at PLU is a multidisciplinary program that enriches the liberal arts curriculum by adding new perspectives on women’s lives and accomplishments. The intent of the program is not simply to supplement a traditional education with a token look at women’s contributions to various fields, but to provide you with a critical filter through which to view other learning and life experiences.

Why major in Women’s Studies at PLU?

The Pacific Lutheran University Women’s Studies major examines the influence of gender on the research interests and study of other disciplines. Unearthing and analyzing the historically marginalized or misappropriated voices of women throughout history provides vital new perspectives on the social, political and personal reality of the late 20th century. The Women’s Studies major incorporates gender focus and feminist perspectives into the study of historical events and social change, creation and transmission of culture and the arts, cultural construction of our physical and intellectual characteristics, and contemporary social and political issues.

Who should participate in Women’s Studies?

Women’s Studies broadens the liberal arts education of both female and male students. It enhances career preparation and professional opportunities by making you aware of the political, historical, and social context surrounding shifting gender roles, thereby preparing you for interaction in a diverse workplace.

Who teaches Women’s Studies?

The Women’s Studies Program is administered and staffed by PLU faculty. Women and men from the anthropology, communication & theatre, English, history, philosophy, psychology, physical education, religion and sociology are regular Women’s Studies instructors.

What does a Women’s Studies major require?

Women’s Studies is a complementary major. Conferral of a Women’s Studies baccalaureate degree requires completion of a second major from any discipline in the university. Students are encouraged to declare both majors simultaneously and to plan a program aware of the possibilities for applying individual courses to both majors. The Women’s Studies major allows application of courses from the second major and from the general university requirements (Core I and Core II) to the Women’s Studies major.
