For Students

The first year experience is a sequence of courses designed to help you develop the skills necessary to be a successful college student and a thoughtful, engaged and caring member of society. First-Year classes assist with the transition to college academics and create small learning communities that support you academically and personally. First-Year Experience is structured to provide you with an engaging learning environment.

Small classes: One of the most powerful ways to learn is in small groups with maximum individual feedback from your professor.

Classes With Only First-Year Students: Build confidence by making the transition to college-level study with your peers.

Compelling Course Themes: You’ll learn the crucial skills of thinking, speaking and writing by applying them to a thought-provoking topic. All First-Year Writing and DJS seminars are focused on important and compelling themes – like “The Art of Living,” “Banned Books,” “Climate Justice and Resilience,” and “Privacy and Surveillance.” Professors from every academic college teach in the program, giving you a strong introduction to the liberal arts. Whatever your interests, you can find a home for yourself among the many themes offered.
