Global Studies Program

What do current Global Studies students have to say about their experiences in the program?

I chose to look into the Global Studies major because it seemed to pair very nicely with my Spanish major, and work as a supplement to what I was learning in Spanish. Especially after a semester abroad in Oaxaca, Social Justice and Development issues became very important to me and something I want to pursue more thoroughly. The variety of courses I was able to take (both on campus and abroad) to fulfill the concentration requirements allowed me to get a broad perspective of social justice and development issues around the globe, as well as more of a focus on Latin America to supplement my Spanish degree.

Through PLU, I was able to travel to South Africa, Uganda and Honduras for class. These courses are what truly shaped me as a student of global studies. It's great to study global issues in the classroom but PLU challenges me to make the world my classroom. This program recognizes the  need to go to study in the places you spend your time learning about.

Studying abroad has been the best thing I've done at PLU. It has affected me and transformed me in so many ways. Not only do I feel as though studying away has opened me to a new world culturally and linguistically, I have met whole new network of families and created communities in two countries outside of the US. My time abroad has also revealed to me how beautiful and complicated this world is.
