PLU Google Apps Account Transition

Account Transition on Evening of Thursday, November 11

PLU’s Google Apps for Education account structure is changing to expand the set of Google services available. New services will include Blogger, Picasa Web Albums, Alerts, Reader, and others. The look and function of Google email, calendar, and other services that you're accustomed to will not change.

On the evening of Thursday, November 11, Pacific Lutheran University’s Information & Technology Services (I&TS) will convert your account and it will start working more like an external personal Google Account.
You can view a summary of what’s changing here. This transition process will take several hours. No downtime is anticipated during the transition period, however, if using your account at the moment of transition you may be required to re-login.

After the transition, you will be prompted to review a notification page that looks like this and accept the changes to continue to your account. After the transition, keep in mind that you won't be able to sign in to multiple Google Accounts (your PLU and your external Google account) at the same time. If this is a problem for you, learn how to get around this issue.

What’s New?

Links at Top Left - You’ll notice differences in what links appear in top left corner of your Google Apps pages. Clicking the “More” link will lead to many more choices of Google products.

New Google Apps - By going through this transition, you'll be able to access many more Google products with your PLU ePass account. After your account transition, you will have access to applications such as Blogger, Reader, News, Picasa Web Albums and other Google services within your PLU Google Apps account.  A complete list of the new applications available is posted here.

Account Dashboard - Google Dashboard is a new service that shows a summary of your profile and the data stored within your Google Apps account. In most Google Applications you can access the dashboard by going to the “Settings” menu in the top right corner of the screen and selecting “Google Account Settings”. From here you can see:

  • Personal Settings - A summary of your personal settings including any nicknames or aliases as well as links to change your passwords.
  • My Products - A list of products you’ve accessed with your account.

Start Page (iGoogle) - You will now notice a Start Page link located in the upper left corner of your screen when logged into your Google Apps account. This will take you to your iGoogle page which can be customized to display information that interests you or that you access frequently.

New Sign-In Option - You can also sign in to Google services from the regular Google sign-in pages (like http://mail.google.com). Your username is your full epass@plu.edu email address; be sure to include “@plu.edu” after your username. 

Multiple Sign-In - After your account transition, you’ll find that you can’t log in to more than one Google account (e.g. your PLU account and your external Google account) in the same browser. You can enable Multiple Sign-In by following the instructions here. Alternatively, you can log in to each account in a different browser, as described here.
