Philosophy Department Presentation: "Philosophical Farming"
November 10, 2009 - 7:00 PM - 8:30 PMUniversity Center, Room 201

A collaborative presentation on "Philosophical Farming" with Professor Erin McKenna, Sarah Curtis and Jon Stout. Professor McKenna will report on research she did with PLU students Sarah Curtis and Jon Stout.  They interviewed six different farmers about their views of nature and how those views affect the way they raise animals.  The views and practices of these farms are examined in terms of several philosophical theories--Ecofeminism, American Pragmatism, and the land ethic.  After the paper is presented the students will comment on their experience. Erin McKenna is a Professor of Philosophy, former Chair of Philosophy and former chair of Women's Studies. She specializes in feminist theory and American Pragmatism. One of her publications, in which she was co-editor, is a volume titled Animal Pragmatism . This came out in the spring of 2004 from Indiana University Press. McKenna has been teaching at PLU since 1992.
