Study the language of peaceful coexistence, politically and socially

The Nordic countries are by many considered to be political and social models because of their long-standing tradition of peaceful co-existence and concern for all their citizens. In studying about Scandinavia we come to appreciate the role the Nordic countries play in the world today and to understand the historical and cultural context out of which they have developed.
Those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own. –Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Scandinavia provides an excellent model for discovering how government policy interacts with social reality. The values underlying current policies reflect major modern concerns - enhancing the quality of life, preserving the environment, and providing equal access to jobs and social programs for all people regardless of gender and ethnic background.

Like any good international program, Scandinavian Studies teaches us, through comparison and contrast, a great deal about our own nation and its values. Language and culture studies also teach useful analytical and communicative skills.

For students who come from a Nordic background, Scandinavian Studies strengthens heritage awareness and foster an appreciation of the cultural traditions that have shaped one's own life.
