The URL for this file is: http://www.plu.edu/libr/media/scanning.html

This document describes the scanning process using the PowerMac 6100, SilverScan Scanner, and PhotoShop software at Media Services. You can schedule this equipment for use during Media Services hours by coming to the Media Services Desk or calling (253) 535-7509. A current PLU ID card is required for using the equipment.

Images can be incorporated into web documents and viewed from graphic web browsers like NetScape. The key to using images in web pages is to put the images into .GIF or .JPG file types that web browsers can read. These file can then be transferred into the public_html directory of your SAGE account for linking into web pages.

    Transferring Files to SAGE

    To access your images from the web, you need to store the image files in your PUBLIC_HTML directory. Several options are available for moving files from your diskette to SAGE. If you have access to a computer connected directly to Ethernet (like those in the University Center User Room), you can FTP the files using software such as WinFTP or Fetch. If your computer is connected to SAGE using a serial line, you can transfer files using Kermit or ZModem protocols and your communications software. See FTP Workshop materials for more information about transferring files.

    Displaying Images in Your Web Pages

    You can link to your image files using this HTML tag format:

    <img src="http://www.plu.edu/~YOUR_ACCOUNT/IMAGE.gif" alt="">
    In this example replace YOUR_ACCOUNT with your SAGE account name and replace IMAGE with the name of your image file. The alt="" portion allows you to specify alternate images or text between the quote marks if the image is not displayable by the web browser. For example, if the alt tag is left intact, no image will appear in Lynx; if IMAGE is placed between the quotes, the the word IMAGE will appear in Lynx.
