Capturing Video Images for Web Pages

Images can be incorporated into web documents and viewed from web browsers like NetScape or Mosiac. The key to using images in web pages is to put the images into the .GIF or .JPG file types that web browsers can read. For an example see the University of Washington's Almost Live view on their home page.

Below is an example of how you can capture a video image for your web page.

This GIF file called CLASS1.GIF, was captured at the University Center user room and digitized for display as a GIF image.

Capturing a Video Portrait for Web Display

To capture capture a video image you will need: Use the following steps to capture video frames:
  1. Capture video frames on camcorder to video tape.
  2. Connect camcorder to Macintosh II VIDEO IN jack using RCA cable.
  3. Open ScreenPlay software on Macintosh to view video tape.
  4. Play back video tape to find best portrait to capture.
  5. Capture video frame by dragging the ScreenPlay screen to desktop.
  6. Save screen as PICT image.
  7. Copy image to floppy diskette.
  8. Open PICT image in PhotoShop.
  9. Adjust image to smaller size, keeping resolution at 96 dots per inch (the screen resolution of many PCs).
  10. Switch to indexed color mode to reduce file size.
  11. Save file as GIF image to floppy.
  12. Use Fetch to FTP file to your SAGE account in the PUBLIC_HTML directory.
  13. Add the following line to your HTML document to incorporate image:
    <IMG SRC="http://www.plu.edu/~YOUR_ACCOUNT/IMAGENAME.gif" alt="Image">
  14. Open the document in NetScape to display the image.
