FTP Netiquette
"The art of being a good guest is to know when to
leave."
Prince Philip, 1962
Below are a few tips on how to be a good net citizen by using some FTP
manners:
- If a mirror of a busy site is available choose the closest mirror as
possible to reduce the transfer and connect time.
- Keep FTP connection times minimal. Don't leave an FTP connection
open and unattended if you're not using it.
- If possible, use a web browser to hunt and browse files to reduce
times connected to FTP servers.
- Access during off-peak hours, if possible and certainly only
during the hours posted as available for anonymous login.
- Don't upload files without asking first.
- Check the file's size before you begin to transfer a file. Make
sure you have enough hard disk space to store it.
