KINDS OF CONNECTIONS
TO THE PLU CAMPUS NETWORK
This section refers to the different kinds of tools and connections
available on the PLU campus. The kinds of connections can be divided
into two types: full internet access and serial access via PEPPER.
- Full Internet Access
- With full internet access, your computer is connected directly to
the
internet and has an IP address (for example, 152.117.XX.XXX
where "152.117" is the PLU campus network and the
"X"'s signify the exact address of the
network in your building and your specific computer address). You use
FTP client software (such as WinFTP for Windows or
Fetch for the Macintosh) on your computer to access FTP
servers on the internet.
- Serial Access
- With Serial access, you must log into PEPPER via a telnet session
and
use the FTP client software on PEPPER to acesss FTP servers on the
internet. This is usually done by using a Xyplex terminal server
where
you have a "Xyplex>" prompt and log into PEPPER by using the
"C PEPPER" command.
You can get an idea of the kind of connection you have in your room
or
office by looking at the wall plate where you plug your phone into
the
wall.
- Serial lines connect to the campus network using MMJ data jacks
which
have the clip part of the plug offset to the right of the center part
of
the plug (unlike the phone jack which has the clip part of the plug
in
the center).
- Ethernet lines connect to the campus network using RJ-45 jacks
which
have the clip part of the plug under the center part of the plug
(like
the smaller phone jack which has the clip part of the plug in the center
too).
