Control Schemes for Mixed - Media Musical Performance

The synthesis of live musical performance with prerecorded or computer generated audio tracks is an artistic medium with huge potential. Unfortunately, works such as these (for example, Steven Bryant's "Ecstatic Waters") come with infamous performance difficulties, as the temporal synchronization between the live and digital components is easily lost and almost impossible to recover. The root problem is the fact that the audio track is mindless; it is unable to perceive or respond to any external feedback from the conductor or performers. This capstone project explores potential solutions to this problem — that is, methods by which the audio track can be made responsive to the conductor or performers. The specific control schemes surveyed are manual user interfaces, motion tracking, and audio recognition.
