Admission to the Nursing Program

PLU welcomes applications from all students who have demonstrated capacities for success at the baccalaureate level. Undergraduate students seeking admission to the nursing major must submit separate applications to the University and to the School of Nursing. The application to the BSN program can be requested from the School of Nursing, nurs@plu.edu, or downloaded from this website. Accepted nursing students may begin the sequence of required nursing courses in the  fall or spring semester of each year.

The priority deadline for applications to the BSN programs is FEBRUARY 1st each year  for admission to the following academic year (fall and spring semesters). 

Application Process

Prior to the academic year you expect to begin your undergraduate nursing program at Pacific Lutheran University:

  • Submit completed PLU Undergraduate Application packet to the PLU Office of Admission. Application can be completed online, or requested from the University Office of Admission(1-800-274-6758) or admission@plu.edu.

Submit financial aid forms from the Office of Admission as instructed.

  • Candidates who have submitted application by the priority deadline date (February 1st) will be notified of acceptance status by the end of June.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the university's requirements, the School of Nursing has prerequisites. Nursing prerequisite requirements vary, depending on the program to which the student is applying:

Basic BSN Program Prerequisites:
  • Psych 101: Introduction to Psychology (4 semester credits)
  • Bio 205: Anatomy and Physiology I with on-site lab(4 semester credits), taken within the last 6 years
  • Bio 206: Anatomy and Physiology II with on-site lab (4 semester credits), taken within the last 6 years
  • Chem 105: Chemistry of Life (Organic and Biochemistry) with on-site lab (4 semester credits)
Co-Requisites for Basic BSN Program (these may be taken along with your first nursing courses):
  • Bio 201: Microbiology with on-site lab, taken within the last 6 years (4 semester credits)
  • Psych 320: Developmental Psychology -- Lifespan (4 semester credits)
  • Stat 231 (acceptable at PLU as an alternative: Stat 232 or 233) (4 semester credits)
LPN to BSN Program Prerequisites:
  • Psych 101: Introduction to Psychology (4 semester credits)
  • Bio 205: Anatomy and Physiology I with on-site lab(4 semester credits), taken within the last 6 years
  • Bio 206: Anatomy and Physiology II with on-site lab (4 semester credits), taken within the last 6 years
  • Chem 105: Chemistry of Life (Organic and Biochemistry) with on-site lab(4 semester credits)
  • Bio 201: Microbiology with on-site lab, taken within the last 6 years (4 semester credits)
  • Psych 320: Development Across the Lifespan (4 semester credits)
  • (Stat 231 is a co-requisite for the LPN to BSN program)

The Comparable Course Guide lists equivalent courses at Washington State community colleges and universities which fulfill nursing prerequisite and co-requisite requirements for the PLU School of Nursing. Students are encouraged to review the comparable course listings to identify courses which can be transferred to Pacific Lutheran University to fulfill nursing as well as general university requirements.

The PLU Registrar's office offers complete Transfer Equivalency Guides for all Washington State community colleges at their website. These guides show all courses at state community colleges that are accepted for undergraduate transfer credit to PLU. Applicants can also contact PLU Admissions at (253) 535-7151 to request an evaluation of transcripts for transfer credit. Minimum Criteria for Consideration for Admission to the School of Nursing Include:
  • Formal admission to Pacific Lutheran University. Admission to the university does not guarantee admission to the School of Nursing.
  • Completion, or pending completion of specified prerequisite course work at PLU, a community college or another accredited university.
  • Completion of at least 30 semester credits (at least 45 quarter credits) at the college level, which is equivalent to sophomore status.
  • A minimum of 2.0 in each prerequisite and co-requisite course.
  • No more than one repeat of a prerequisite or co-requisite course
  • A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 in nursing prerequisite course work.
  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  • Completion of the university math entrance requirement (two years of college preparatory math with average grades of "C" or higher, or one semester of intermediate algebra at the college level with a grade of "C" or higher).
  • Physical health and emotional stability sufficient to meet the demands of nursing and provide safe patient care.
  • Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing college-level English.
  • Civil, administrative, and criminal history clearance in all states, as well as any applicable territory or country.
  • Submission of all documents to the School of Nursing by the designated deadlines.

 Undergraduate Nursing Admission 

Students seeking admission to Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs (basic BSN and LPN to BSN) must apply and be admitted as an undergraduate student at Pacific Lutheran University and submit the separate application to the School of Nursing BSN program.
