Outdoor Rec

What do winter camping at Mount Rainier, Rock Climbing at Smith Rock State Park, OR, and Spelunking in the Ape Caves of Mt. St. Helens all have in common? Quite a few things… But for starters, they all happen to be trips that the PLU Outdoor Recreation Program leads every year! Outdoor Rec. consists of 16 Wilderness First Aid trained student guides that lead over 35 trips a year to PLU students, faculty and staff. There is a trip offered just about every weekend that varies in length from one day, to a weeklong spring break extravaganza!

PLU Outdoor Rec. has been in existence for over 30 years and we have a firm mission statement in which all guides abide. The number one priority is safety, as we are all Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Certified. This course is a 3-day hands-on training curriculum that focuses on preventing dangerous scenarios and treating and responding to emergencies in an outdoor setting. The second component of our mission is to provide affordable outdoor programming that helps to foster stewardship towards our local environment. Outdoor Rec. believes that all students should have the gear, knowledge, and leadership necessary to thrive in the beautiful natural environments just outside of PLU’s doorstep.

In addition to guiding trips, Outdoor Rec. runs a gear rental program where students can rent everything from tents and sleeping bags, to hammocks and climbing gear! This gear can be rented for a very low cost to PLU students, and is provided free of charge on all of our trips. However most students agree that the best thing we provide is the legendary OR Lunch. This monster of a meal consists of tortillas as the base and students are encouraged to pile on as much peanut butter, cheese, sausage, salsa, jelly, chips, peppers, and cream cheese as possible. This formula has been unscientifically proven to sustain even the most tired of Lute. OR leads a trip every weekend, so encourage your students to set that laptop down, turn off the TV, get outside and go see what the natural world has to offer!

The spring event schedule will be posted the second week in February. Click here to go to the Outdoor Rec Website!
