February 18 – The Mooring Mast 90th Anniversary Party
6:00pm – 10:00pm
Anderson University Center: Chris Knutzen Hall
A celebratory networking event in honor of the 90th year of The Mooring Mast. Includes students, alumni, and faculty. Dessert and drinks will be served. A video will be playing with pictures from the archives of past mast staff and papers.

PLU Choral and Instrumental ensembles present a sample of their repertoires at 8:00pm. This event coincides with scholarship audition weekend.

February 11 – Poetry Above the Roar - A Recital of Songs from Tacoma

MBR Music Center 306: Choral Rehearsal Room
Mezzo Soprano and PLU alumna Erin (Parr) Calata ('08) premieres ten songs by Gregory Youtz on poems by William Kupinse, UPS poet and Tacoma's first Poet Laureate. This hour-long cycle of songs combines popular and classical styles and is sung entirely to pre-recorded computer tracks, sounding alternately like a small jazz combo and a chamber orchestra.
Tickets: Free admission, no tickets.

February 20 – Black History Month Concert

David Deacon Joyner and colleagues present musical genres relating to Black History Month, a joint effort by the PLU School of Arts and Communication, the Office of Admission, and the Tacoma Ministerial Alliance. The concert will feature PLU student ensembles, including the university orchestra, wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, and Chorale. It will also feature Tacoma community talent, including steel drum artist Obe Quarless, vocalist Marlette Buchanan, and DaNell Daymon and the Greater Works Chorale. The musical program will not only showcase the music of African-Americans, but will also feature the music of European composers from the early 20th Century that were inspired by African-American music, including French composer Darius Milhaud's La Creation du Monde and the second movement of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak's New World Symphony. The PLU jazz ensemble will present the music of Duke Ellington, accompanying the PLU Swing Club dance troupe.
Tickets: $8 general admission, $5 senior citizen (55+), $3 alumni, free PLU community, 18 and under.

Wendy Byrnes gives this recital in partial fulfillment of the Bachelor of Music Degree. She studies voice with Marlette Buchanan.

LASR and ASPLU are bringing Canadian musician Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, Fifths of Seven) to Lagerquist for a solo piano performance of his new album, Julia With Blue Jeans On (Jagjaguwar Records).
