November 14th - Flight Testing the Boeing 707
10:30am – 12:30pm
Garfield Book Company Community Room
Test pilot John McEvoy speaks to Learning Is ForEver.
Boeing’s first commercial jet –the 707– dominated passenger air transport in the 1960’s. But back in 1957-1958, the Civil Aeronautic Authority(CAA) had no experience with commercial jet aircraft. Our speaker, John McEvoy, tested this plane so it could be certified by the CAA (Today it falls under the FAA). The Boeing Company produced over 1,000 commercial and 800 military versions of this jet, which established it as one the largest airline manufacturing companies.
On any given day, test pilots find themselves in a cockpit performing maneuvers the rest of us would deem insane. Stall speed, maximum braking allowance with a full load, and how a jet handles in extreme weather, are just a few of the many tests needed to certify a plane.
Join us as we learn about this chapter in the history of flight.
FREE to all PLU students, staff and faculty. $10 to the public
