Summer Updates

Welcome back, Lutes!
All students are invited to a Pancake Feed in Red Square on Monday, September 5, 2005 from 8 - 10 a.m. Bring your appetite, summer stories and desire to see friends old and new!

  • Information and Technology Services (formerly known as Information Resources) has begun a project this summer to create wireless access points in campus residence hall lounges. As lounges are enabled with wireless network access, they will be posted at: www.plu.edu/~resnet/wireless-networking/home.html.

  • Construction of the Morken Center for Learning & Technology, the largest single capital project in PLU’s history, continues apace. You will see the completed building shell when you arrive in the fall. This summer’s projects include reviewing building technology and planning for the landscaping and interior work that will begin in the fall.

  • The “Big Dig” has begun! A major ground-work project is underway on campus this summer to implement the first major upgrade of physical communications pathways in 15 years. The Big Dig will create a new telecommunication backbone that supports future construction and makes our current campus systems (i.e. Internet and phone services) easier to upgrade. Associated landscape changes and repaving will significantly improve drainage and accessibility on upper-campus.

2005-2006 Student Planner
The Daily Planner and Student Handbook has daily and monthly calendars pre-printed with important PLU information! Residential students will receive their planners during move-in. New off-campus students will receive a planner during orientation. Continuing off-campus students can pick one up at the Campus Concierge, Student Involvement & Leadership Office, Student Services Center or the Student Life Office on September 6, 2005.

Student Code of Conduct
PLU is a community in which every member has a vital role in creating and maintaining a positive educational environment. Therefore, each student is expected to be familiar with and uphold all university policies. Please review the Code of Conduct at www.plu.edu/print/handbook. Ignorance of policy is not an excuse for violating it! Please contact the Student Involvement & Leadership Office at 253-535-7195 (sil@plu.edu) if you have any questions about PLU’s conduct expectations or procedures.

Orientation
Check out www.plu.edu/new-students/orientation for this fall's orientation events.

Residential Students
If you have any questions about living on-campus, please contact the Residential Life Office at 253-535-7200 or rlif@plu.edu. Roommate assignments will be mailed during the first week of August. Don’t forget to return your Housing contract to Residential Life as soon as possible!

Hall Opening
During opening weekend (Thursday, 9/1/05 – Monday, 9/5/05), the halls will be staffed for check-in until 9 p.m. Early arrivals are by pre-arrangement only. They are coordinated by coaches, advisors and supervisors. Only students approved by their coach, advisor or supervisor will be considered for early arrival.

South Hall opens Wednesday, August 31, 2005.

All residence halls open on Thursday, September 1, 2005. New student (first-year and transfer) check-in will begin at 9 a.m. This early opening is intended to give new students an opportunity to settle in prior to orientation events starting in the afternoon. All students are welcome to check-in beginning at 11 a.m.

Hall Updates
This year Foss and Harstad are being remodeled. Foss Hall has new movable furniture in resident rooms, new room and hallway paint, improved lighting throughout the building, new carpet in common areas, and an additional computer hook-up in each room. Harstad Hall has new plumbing and fixtures in resident bathrooms.

Off-Campus Students
Off campus students must file their most current local address with the Student Services Center by either visiting the Student Services Center in Hauge Administration Building, Room 102, or you can go online to www.plu.edu/ssvc, go to "Downloadable Documents", print the Address Confirmation Form and return it to the Center. University information will be sent via postal mail as well as e-mail. On-campus lockers are available in the University Center on a first-come first-served basis. Contact Student Involvement and Leadership at 253-535-7195 or sil@plu.edu for details.

Convocation and Campus Involvement and Job Fair
President Anderson invites new and continuing students, as well as family members, to Convocation. This annual tradition opens the academic year by welcoming our new students and faculty. Dr. Anderson will share his vision for the 116th academic year at PLU. Please note that all classes are cancelled during convocation, and all campus offices are closed as well.

The Campus Involvement and Job Fair and Campus Reception follow in Red Square. This is a chance to check out leadership, involvement and job opportunities on campus. It is also the traditional fall reunion for faculty, staff and students who can’t wait to share their summer adventures with friends!
