Professor James D. Holloway

Dr. James Holloway was the University Organist and Professor of Organ and Church Music at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington where he served as a studio teacher, musicologist and choral conductor. He created the newly established Mentorship Program for Vocations in Church Music at PLU. He also taught in the Honors program and the Freshman Experience program.

With appearances throughout the United States and Europe to his credit, he maintained an active performing schedule. He was a featured recitalist at two international festivals, and performed and lectured at national and regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists, the Organ Historical Society and the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. He was a winner in 16 organ competitions on the state, regional and national level, and he was well-known as a writer and conference speaker on topics in church music and the German Romantic organ repertoire. His doctoral research at the University of Washington was focused on the organ works of Franz Liszt.

Dr. Holloway served as a member of the national board and President of the Western United States region of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. He was a board member and affiliate artist for Choral Arts Northwest. A long-time pastoral musician, he served parishes in the Southwest, Southeast and Northwestern United States, most recently a ten-year period as the pastoral musician for Trinity Lutheran, Tacoma. While at Trinity, he established one of the largest and most active church music programs in the Northwest.

In addition to his solo performances, he had a special love of choral accompanying and worked with such noted conductors as Robert Shaw, Dale Warland and Richard Sparks. His teachers include Peter DeWitt, Charles S. Brown, Warren Hutton and Carole Terry. His playing is featured on 4 CD's and his articles have appeared in national journals.

He was an active recitalist, writer and speaker in organ performance and church music. Dr. Holloway served on numerous national and regional boards and organizations.
