Scandinavian Area Studies brings together a variety of scholarly approaches to understanding human society, culture, language and art, using these tools to understand the peoples and societies of Scandinavia.
Students majoring in Scandinavian Area Studies develop the strong critical and analytical skills that are the hallmark of a liberal arts education, along with expertise in an exciting and vibrant region known for its innovative approaches to democracy, literature and design, yet a region also affected by powerful worldwide processes like colonialism, migration and globalization. By studying these societies and cultures, students gain valuable insights that can readily be applied to most any social, cultural or artistic situation.
Scandinavia, or the Nordic region, consists of the countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, and the autonomous regions of Greenland, the Faroe Islands and the Åland Islands, and is also home to the indigenous Sámi people.
Despite major differences in language and culture, the peoples of the Nordic region share historical connections that have led to similar social, cultural and economic institutions, and which have fostered a certain sense of a collective Nordic identity.
