Dr. Fred Tobiason '58

Thanks to the generosity of Chuck
('60) and Ann (Thingvall '56) Laubach, endowments to support both
faculty and student research in the natural sciences have been established
for long-time friend and retired PLU chemistry professor, Dr. Fred
Tobiason '58.
Earnings from the Dr. Fred L. Tobiason Endowment for Faculty/Student
Science Research will provide stipends for PLU faculty and undergraduate
students involved in natural science research. Dr. Tobiason taught
at PLU from 1966 until he began phased retirement in 1992. He has
continued serving the university by teaching classes part-time and
conducting research.
Gift proceeds also established the
Charles and Ann Laubach Family Endowment for Faculty/Student Science
Research. For most of his career, Chuck was a chemist at the Puget
Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., and Ann has been managing
the family business, Bri-Lor Enterprises.
This significant gift from the Laubachs
helped PLU meet the initial requirements of a challenge grant
from the M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust. An additional $276,600
for endowment to support faculty/student science research must
be raised by March 2002 in order for the university to receive
the final grant installment from the Trust.
