Stay awhile – Ingram’s new spaces give students a place to work, rest and breathe

For many artists and communication majors at PLU, Ingram Hall can be considered a second home. Students work in the studio late into the night completing projects, while communication majors have ample amount of group work on their plate.

Two new collaborative spaces are now in Ingram to serve students. As the brainchild of Professor Jp Avila, Chair of Art & Design, and Professor Amy Young, Chair of Communication & Theatre, these spaces are meant to foster community and give students a second home.

“We hope to see the space used collaboratively between the two departments and for projects beyond the classroom,” Avila says. “Some of the best work done on a project is when you are able to bounce ideas off others.”

The Student Lounge (Ingram 119):

Ingram 119, which has long been used as a faculty office is now a Student Lounge. The fresh space has been entirely cleaned and repainted. Avila and Young, wanted to give students a space to relax, unwind, eat lunch, have coffee, and connect with friends. Students will find a sectional couch, loveseat, and coffee table along with a table and chairs for eating or project work.

A full-size refrigerator, microwave, and a coffee pot make this space feel homey. The Student Lounge is open during building hours. Students are expected to follow the “House Rules.”

New worktables and chairs transform Wekell Gallery into a Student Work Area. Dozens of chairs, several long tables and a comfy couch set the scene for a quiet place to work individually or in a team. The space’s proximity to Wi-Fi, eliminates connectivity issues. Avila and Young hope students find this space to be a place of focus and productivity.

The walls are left blank – faculty encourage students to fill it with artistic work: writings, renderings, sketches and creativity. More formal artwork showings will still take place on the east walls each month.

In addition to these collaborative spaces, the SOAC dean’s office, which also serves as the department office for both Art & Design, and Communication & Theatre, has been given a visual refresh. Red walls with a gold SOAC logo mark the main office, making it easier for student and visitors to find. Students are welcome to visit the office to say hello, schedule appointments with select professors and ask questions.
