The Office of Student Employment strives to enhance student development through on-the-job experience. In order to promote learning on-the-job, we feel it is necessary to train our students with the proper skills and knowledge needed to be successful student workers. This summer we have developed a student employee orientation. Additionally, we have dates set for group training sessions in order to expose new student employees to good work ethic and proper job behavior.
However, there is only so much that this training course can do for our student employees. We need your help to develop these students into the employees of tomorrow's workforce. In addition to our employee orientation, we encourage all employers to give additional training to your students and provide evaluations of their work at the end of each semester.
Our office is happy to provide a basic rubric that you may use to evaluate the work being done by your student employee. Nevertheless, please feel free to adapt this model to fit your particular department or office where it seems appropriate. The ultimate goal of this training and evaluation process is to provide our students with the necessary background knowledge as well as a feedback system that will promote personal development as well as:
1) Teaching students and holding them accountable for proper work ethic
2) Providing a portfolio of employment feedback that they can later use when applying for jobs
3) Providing a tool that can be used for reflection and learning
The completed evaluation should be discussed with the student and s/he should be given a copy of this form. Additionally, a copy of the completed evaluation should be forwarded to the Office of Student Employment for the student's file and the original should be filed within the department, office, or division of origin.
