Wang Center: Study Away

Scholarships

The number one thing to remember is to
Be Proactive in Applying for Scholarships!

It is important to understand all of the costs involved with a study away program.  Please contact the Wang Center if you have any questions about financial planning for study away.  We are happy to assist you!  While many program fees are similar to your regular PLU costs of attendance, other programs may be more expensive.  Good planning will assist you in accessing possible financial aid.  Please take time to review the following information and websites related to financing your study away program.

Start researching possible scholarships early-at least one term to two years prior to when you plan to go abroad.  Most scholarship deadlines are well before the actual program application deadline, sometimes a year or more prior to the actual award year.

Check with the Wang Center or your program sponsor (such as IES Abroad, CIEE, SIT Study Abroad, etc.) about scholarships designated specifically for your program choice.  Your host country's local cultural organizations may also offer scholarships.  The web sites below may be useful in your search for funding.

Financial Aid

The cost to participate in Gateway and Featured semester study away programs, listed below, is typically the PLU comprehensive fee for tuition, housing, and meals.  These semester programs include: PLU China, PLU Norway, PLU Mexico, PLU Trinidad & Tobago, PLU International Internships, LCCT Tanzania, ILACA Granada, AHA London, CGE Namibia, and ISEP. Round-trip international air travel, personal travel, and other similar items are additional expenses.

The cost to participate on PLU-Approved programs, offered by outside providers, varies from location to location.  Students participating in these programs will be charged the base cost of the program plus an administrative fee of $1,500 per semester. Please note that PLU institutional gift aid can only be used on one PLU-approved semester program.  Because each of the approved programs has a different price, it is important to talk with a Study Away Advisor in the Wang Center for specific information.

Financial aid may be applied to all PLU Gateway, Featured, and Approved programs.   This includes State and Federal financial aid (with the exception of work study), university grants and scholarships, and government loans.  International students attending PLU Gateway semester programs in China, Norway, Mexico, and Trinidad & Tobago will continue to receive their PLU financial aid.

Tuition remission benefits apply to the cost of study away tuition, but not to housing and meal charges.  Tuition exchange benefits only apply to the tuition component of these PLU programs: Norway, China, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago, and International Internships. Tuition exchange benefits do not apply to any other study away programs.
