Personal
Biography
Claudia Berguson is an associate professor in the Department of Languages and Literatures, where she teaches courses in Norwegian language and Scandinavian literature, film and culture. She has taught at PLU since 2003. She holds a Ph.D. in Scandinavian Studies from the University of Washington and Master’s degrees in Scandinavian Studies and Intercultural Relations. Claudia is an active scholar, with publications and conference presentations centering on two main areas of research: contemporary migrant literature in Scandinavia and the novels of the Norwegian author Sigrid Undset. Her work also includes translation of contemporary Norwegian and Swedish migrant novels and short stories to English. Claudia was a Fulbright scholar in Norway from 2002-2003, and has worked in Scandinavia as both a language summer school administrator and study program group leader. Study abroad is a key commitment in Claudia’s professional life at PLU. She was the program director for PLU’s Hedmark Program for four years, and now serves as the PLU program director for the Telemark Program, the newest addition to the university’s Gateway Norway offerings. In 2009 she launched a new J-Term course in Iceland and Norway in which students explored current issues of language, culture and identity. With a colleague, she is developing a new summer course in Norway slated to begin in 2010.
