Course Description:

Spend J-Term learning about the history and culture of New Zealand while backpacking and hiking in some of the most dramatic scenery in the world.

Hike up ancient volcano craters, to glacial mountain lakes, and along sandy ocean beaches. Explore museums that reflect the history and culture of the other land "down under" in Christchurch, the beautiful "garden city." Visit a local Maori Center and experience a Hangi (Maori feast). Explore the recreational fun town of Queenstown (home of bungee jumping), the dramatic alpine scenery of the Milford Track, and majestic Mt. Cook. In the US we "hike the trails in the forest", but in New Zealand the rugged individualistic kiwis "tramp the tracks in the bush." Expand your global awareness by learning about the society, culture, history, politics and environmental concerns of New Zealand.

Course Objectives:

  • To expose students to the geography, history, and culture of New Zealand.
  • The organization of the class will provide students with many "hands on" opportunities to experience life and the culture of New Zealand and will also help students to learn how to coexist with other colleagues in a variety of settings.
  • Students are expected to work cooperatively in teams as we travel around New Zealand.
