Join us in Tobago to experience its fascinating island culture. We will explore the strengths and needs of this multi-cultural community and see the effects of history and colonialism as they relate to the development of community problems and concerns. We will engage in a variety of learning activities in numerous settings. Most of our time will be on the Caribbean Island of Tobago in the town of Scarborough. Here students will participate in a variety of voluntary, job shadowing, and didactic learning activities in educational, social service, community, and health care settings. They will interact with service providers and community residents. Through readings and reflections on their own experiences, hearing from guest speakers, and visiting social, health, and educational settings, they will develop an understanding of the meaning of service in another culture as well as a better understanding of their own ethic of meaningful service. The course also includes a 4 - 5 day excursion to the partner island of Trinidad.
