2012-2013 Season

Our new season is anchored by important works by three great Germanic masters. Join us to hear these and all the great concertos and new pieces along the way!

Sixteenth Annual High School Orchestra Invitational, Saturday October 13, Noon-7 pm, Lagerquist Hall

High school orchestras from throughout the region will perform on the Largerquist stage and receive comments from our guest clinician. The PLU Symphony Orchestra will also play a special 3 pm performance. This event is free and open to the public. No Tickets Needed.

Orchestra Series I: Tuesday October 9, 8 pm, Lagerquist Hall

This concert features a symphonic favorite, Jean Sibelius's majestic Symphony No. 2 in D Major. Beginning the program will be some dramatic foreshadowing of the season to come as we perform the Overture and selected arias from Mozart's Magic Flute. In November Members of the USO will join the Opera Workshop for a fully-staged production of this popular Singspiel.

Opera Series: Thursday November 8 through Saturday November 10 at 8 pm, Sunday November 11 at 3 pm Lagerquist Concert Hall

Members of the University Symphony Orchestra will be in the pit for performances of Mozart's delightful Singspiel, The Magic Flute. James Brown, Director, Jeffrey Bell-Hanson, Conductor.

Orchestra Series II: Tuesday November 13, 8 pm Lagerquist Hall

The USO pursues it's Germanic theme with two works, a regional premiere of Waldkreiburg 1998 by Milton Olsson, and one of the most colorful and popular works by a twentieth century German master, Paul Hindemith; his Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber. Jeffrey Bell-Hanson, conductor.

PLU's popular Christmas Concert, Performances begin December 1 and 2 in Lagerquist Hall, continue on December 3 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle and December 4 at Schnitzer Hall in Portland, and conclude on December 7 back Lagerquist Hall. Contact the Music Department for more info, 253-535-7787.

This annual favorite features the Choir of the West, the University Chorale and members of the University Symphony Orchestra. Get your tickets early! The orchestra will participate in the world premiere of a new piece by PLU's own David Deacon-Joyner, Unto Us a Child is Born.

Orchestra Series III: Student Soloists,Tuesday March 19, 8 pm, Lagerquist Hall

Three PLU student musicians will be chosen by a panel of three guest judges in November.  Their prize will be an opportunity to perform with the University Symphony or other PLU ensembles in Lagerquist Hall. Winners and selections may be seen on the Student Soloists page of this site as they become available. Winners from last season are listed currently. In addition, a new student composition for orchestra will be premiered. Jeffrey Bell-Hanson, conductor.

Orchestra Series IV: KammerMusikere, Friday April 12, 8 pm, Lagerquist Hall

KammerMusikere, the chamber orchestra of the PLUSO, will present a program of intimate orchestral music making. Guest soloist will by Shannon Spicciati in Hilary Tann's Shakkei for oboe and chamber orchestra.

Orchestra Series V: Tuesday May 14, 8 pm, Lagerquist Hall

During our final USO concert we will partner with PLU's Choir of the West and Choral Union (Richard Nance, Director), and soloists to feature two works by Germanic master, Ludwig van Beethoven: Mass in C and the Symphony No. 9 in D Minor.
