Let’s Be Careful Out There
Your safety abroad is a major concern for us. Upon arrival at your study site, locate the nearest U.S. Embassy or consulate and register your name and address with the staff. Your program may handle this matter for you, but always verify this fact. Should there be any political unrest or natural disaster in the country of your residence contact the embassy or the Red Cross immediately for instructions.
We also recommend that you check with the Embassy regarding any travel advisories that might be in effect for countries you wish to visit during vacation periods. The world political situation is always changing and we want you to be aware of any potential difficulties. At all times be conscious of your surroundings, keep a low profile and be fully respectful of your host country's culture and social norms.
Another suggestion is to check on airline ticket insurance. Some students have found that cancellation insurance is a wise investment with their travel plans (both going abroad and returning home). Check with your travel agent and find out what cancellation penalties are attached to your ticket.
And Keep in Touch We want you to be safe while traveling away. We also want to know that you are safe. So, keep your parent/guardian fully informed about all aspects of your study travel program and keep The Wang Center informed of any changes in your contact information. If an incident should arise while you are away, be sure to call home!
