Topics in Chinese Studies: China's Environment
Course Description:
A comprehensive study of the air and water quality in the Chengdu area and at Jiuzhaigou National Nature Reserve will be conducted. Water samples will be collected at selected sites on the Min River and at the Reserve. These samples will then be analyzed using local laboratory facilities. The basics of water and air pollution will be introduced in preparation for the study. Local scientists and officials will provide background on local environmental policies and practices as well as cultural and socio-political information. We will tour local industries and water treatment plants as well as the internationally famous Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center.
Course Objectives:
- Learn and carry out water sampling and analysis
- Analyze local economic, socio-political, and environmental policy data.
- Complete a comprehensive report on the project's findings.
Course Credit :
CHSP 287 (4 credits). Chinese Studies Department credit. Also can be used as an elective toward Environmental Studies.
Program Fee:
$4,150. Includes airfare, lodging, program related transportation and visa fees. Meals not included. Does not include recommended immunizations. See PLU Health Services website for recommendations and costs.
Application Deadline:
April 18, 2008. A non-refundable deposit of $50.00 is required with the application. A $250 non-refundable program payment to confirm participation in the course is due within 10 days of notification of acceptance. Maximum 18 students.
