Intensive Spanish in León, Spain
Course Description:
An intensive Spanish immersion course offered in León, Spain, and geared to students at intermediate (SPAN 201 or 202) language levels. Course includes: 80 total course hours, four hours of class per day for a four-week period, a homestay, two one-day excursions, a weekend trip, and guest lectures on a variety of topics related to the history and culture of the host region of the country, cinema, plays, and other cultural activities. A placement test done on location determines placement at the SPAN 201 and 202 levels. After completion, students earn 4 credits toward GUR University Language or toward Spanish credit for Minors and Majors (only for 202 level). SPAN 301 and SPAN 401 may be offered pending number of students interested (upon consultation with faculty director). Prerequisite: Spanish 102 or equivalent.
Course Location:
University of León, Castilla-León, Spain. León, located about four hours by bus to the north and west of Madrid, in the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains, is a prosperous provincial capital and lively university town. It is famous for its rich history and many monuments dating from Roman times.
Excursions:
Students will take several excursions, including two one-day excursions and a weekend visit to Santiago de Compostela. Santiago is the capital of the neighboring region of Galicia and Christendom's third most important city in the Middle Ages after Rome and Jerusalem.
Homestays:
Students will live with host families from the city. Most meals are included.
Dates:
Summer Session I: Classes begin in León on Monday, May 26, and end on Friday, June 20, 2008. (Students must be in Madrid on Sunday, May 25, at the latest.)
Classes:
Students are expected to attend daily classes at the above-mentioned location, and to study, do the homework, and practice their Spanish with local people.
Program Fee:
$4,595 approximately. Includes registration and instruction, lodging with host family, most meals, program related excursions, program related transportation, and supplemental study away insurance. Does not include international air. (Students are responsible for making their own international air arrangements.)
