Paris 19th Century Art

19th Century Art in Paris

Course Description:

Spend three weeks in Paris studying art movements and painters of the 19th Century. Learn about Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism in the city where these styles originated. Explore the cafe-lined streets and the grand boulevards where such great artists as David, Delacroix, Manet, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Cassat, Seurat, Gauguin, Cezanne, and Van Gogh lived and worked.

Room and board will be provided at an international student center near the University of Paris on the Left Bank. Classes will meet at the Musee du Louvre, one of the largest museums in the world, and the Musee d'Orsay across the River Seine. Additional field trips to specialized museums are scheduled as well. Knowledge of French is helpful, but not required.


Course Objectives:

•  Experience major artworks from the 19th Century.

•  Analyze artworks from the 19th Century.

•  Engage in an art-historical era/period where it happened.


Course Credit:

ARTD 390: Studies in Art History (4 credits). Satisfies GUR in art, art major requirements, and art history minor.


Program Fee:

$4,450. Includes airfare, lodging, 2 meals per day.


Application Deadline:

April 18, 2008. A non-refundable deposit of $50.00 is required with the application. A $250.00 non-refundable program payment is due within 10 days of notification of acceptance to confirm participation in the course. Maximum of 16 students.
